Headshot Preparation Guidelines
Preparation is key for getting your best headshot.
The goal of a high-end headshot is to capture you looking like you on your best day.
The lighting will be amazing, and Sarah will position you to accentuate your best look, but you will be in front of the camera, so here are some tips to arrive ready.
Parking:
On street parking.
130 N Prospect, Suite G,
Granville, OH 43203.
The studio is in a building on the corner of Prospect St and College St.
College street is usually easiest to find a free parking spot.
Desired Focus Photography is on the second floor of the big brick building. There is an elevator on the Prospect street side of the building and a stairwell on the College street side.
Headshot Guidelines for Men
Headshot Clothing
The fit of your clothing is important. Baggy or excessively tight clothing won’t bring out your best.
I recommend wearing a pressed plain dress shirt without patterns (solid color) with crisp collars and collar stays. We don’t want curled collars! Shirts with more structure are better than floppy shirts.
Wear or bring at least one suit or sport jacket. Simple, solid colors without busy patterns are best.
Unless your company has said you are not wearing ties in your headshots, wear a complementary tie, or even bring a couple, if you’d like to wear a tie. If you don’t want to wear a tie, I recommend shirts that are thick enough to work well without an undershirt. Or wear a v‑neck undershirt that isn’t visible when the top button of your dress shirt is undone.
Headshot Hair
Please take the time to style your hair.
Take a shower between your haircut and your session.
Bring every hair styling product and tool you use every day to style your hair.
Get your facial hair looking good. Get your nose and eyebrow hair under control.
Headshot Glasses
If you wear glasses every day, you should have your glasses in your headshot. If you sometimes wear glasses and sometimes wear contacts, bring the glasses to try.
If you have multiple pairs, bring them, so we can try multiple frames and lenses.
Headshot Guidelines for Women
Headshot Clothing
The fit of your clothing is important. Baggy or excessively tight clothing won’t bring out your best.
For individual sessions, wear your best fitting professional top/dress.
Solid or at least non-distracting patterns are best.
Bring a professional jacket if that’s a look you want.
Headshot Hair
Please take the time to style your hair nicely.
Recent haircuts can look new and not the best. If you’d like a fresh haircut, try to schedule a few days before the headshot session.
Bring everything you use to style your hair, including anything you use to tame flyaways.
Headshot Makeup
Please use a light hand with your makeup. In my opinion, natural makeup that simply emphasizes your natural beauty is best.
Eyeliner can be especially distracting in a headshot. I suggest an especially light application if my clients are committed to using it.
Bring lipsticks and/or lip glosses. Please bring basic makeup and tools for touchups. Try to avoid makeup with an SPF, which causes more shine.
Headshot Jewelry
Headshots are all about the facial expression for me, and my artist eye usually prefers to remove all jewelry. If you really want jewelry in the shot, bring options. I prefer less distracting jewelry if it is in the shot.
Headshot Glasses
If you wear glasses every day, you should have your glasses in your headshot. If you sometimes wear glasses and sometimes wear contacts, bring the glasses to try.
If you have multiple pairs, bring them, so we can try multiple frames and lenses.
